Description

Soy wax is primarily made from soybean oil through a process called hydrogenation. This process involves treating the oil with hydrogen, which causes it to solidify into a wax. While some soy waxes are 100% soybean oil, others may include non-soy materials like other vegetable or animal products.

Here’s a soy wax detailed breakdown:

    1. 1. Harvesting and Preparation:

Soybeans are harvested, cleaned, and then cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes.

    2. 2. Oil Extraction:

The oil is extracted from the flakes, either through mechanical pressing or by using a solvent to separate it.

  • 3. Hydrogenation:

The extracted soybean oil undergoes hydrogenation. This process alters the chemical structure of the oil, solidifying it and turning it into wax.

  • 4. Purification:

The resulting wax is then purified to remove any remaining impurities.

  • 5. Final Product:
The purified soy wax is cooled and formed into blocks or flakes, ready for use in candle making or other applications.

    What are the benefits?

Soy’s greatest advantage is that it is completely renewable. While the global reserves of oil shrink and paraffin prices increase, the only limit to the soy supply is how much we choose to grow. The soy that you buy today was likely in the ground less than a year ago. And chances are that same field is growing more soy for the candles to be made in the future.

In addition to sustainability, a well-made soy candle will burn cleanly and slowly, much to the delight of your customers. While the performance and beauty of soy candles speak for themselves, soy wax is truly a marketer’s dream. If you are making soy candles, you can market them as eco-friendly, renewable, American grown, sustainable, carbon-neutral; the list goes on and on.
